Below you find a few examples of children going to school through Kids2School, and what school can mean in the Gambia.
Fatou
Fatou was always dreaming of going to school. But just like many kids in the Gambia she comes from a poor and big family. Having three more sisters and four brothers the family has barely enough money for food, so surely no chance for Fatou to go to school. Supported by a sponsor Fatou has been going to school for four years now. In the meantime she is 12 years old and attending fourth grade at St. Aidan’s Lower Basic. Fatou can now realize her dream of following good education.
Bengali
Bengali is 11 years old. He is also part of big family and has four sisters and three brothers. He loves to play football with his friends in the compound. However Bengali as young as he is, knows already exactly what he wants. He wants to help his country. And that is why he wants to go to school. Also he found a sponsor four years ago and is now in the same class as Fatou. He works hard to get good grades, and he is quite succeeding in this.
Abdul
Abdul is a smart boy, sometimes a bit naughty. He has two sisters and two brothers. Unfortunately his father died and now his uncle is taking care of the family. Due to poverty he also could not attend school. But he wants a better future, not only for himself and his family, but for the whole community. By attending school he hopes to get a good job in the future and be able to fulfill this dream. He is now 9 years old and thanks to his sponsor he is attending the second grade of Seno Lower Basic School.
Nathaniel
Nathaniel’s parents immediately saw that their son would do great at school, but they would not know how to pay for school. They have two daughters and four sons and it is hard to take care of them. Nathaniel however would love to go to school because also he is dreaming about a better future. But without a sponsor this would not be possible. Nine-year old Nathaniel is now in the second grade of St. Tresses Lower Basic School and is very proud to show his sponsors what he has been working on at school.
