What school means to children
Every child has a unique story. Below, we share the stories of four children and what school means to them.
Fatou
Fatou always dreamed of going to school. But like many children in The Gambia, she comes from a poor and large family. With three sisters and four brothers, there is barely enough money for food, let alone a chance for Fatou to attend school. With the help of a sponsor, Fatou has now been going to school for four years. She is currently 12 years old and in the fourth grade at St. Adan’s Lower Basic School. Fatou is now able to fulfill her big dream: receiving a good education.

Bengali
Bengali is 11 years old. He also comes from a large family, with four sisters and three brothers. He loves playing football with his friends in the compound. But even at his young age, Bengali already knows what he wants: to help his country! And that’s why he wants to go to school. He also found a sponsor four years ago and is now in the same class as Fatou. He works hard to get good grades—and he’s doing very well.

Abdul
Abdul is a clever boy, sometimes a little mischievous. He has two sisters and two brothers. Sadly, his father has passed away, and now his uncle takes care of the family. He, too, couldn’t go to school because of poverty. But he wants a better future—not just for himself and his family, but for the whole community. By going to school, he hopes to one day get a good job so he can make that wish come true. He is now 9 years old and, thanks to his sponsor, in the second grade at Seno Lower Basic School.

Nathaniel
The parents of 9-year-old Nathaniel immediately saw that he would do well in school, but they had no idea how they would ever be able to afford it. They have two daughters and four sons to care for, which is a heavy burden. Nathaniel really wanted to go to school too, as he also dreams of a better future. But without a sponsor, it would have been completely impossible. He is now in the second grade at St. Tresses Lower Basic School and is proud to show his sponsors what he’s been working on at school.eft.
